Soil Microbial Diversity Impacts Plant Microbiota More than Herbivory

چکیده
Interactions between plants and microbiomes play a key role in ecosystem functioning are of broad interest due to their influence on nutrient cycling plant protection. However, we do not yet have complete understanding how assembled. Here, tested quantified the effect different factors driving diversity composition plant-associated microbial communities. We manipulated soil (high or low diversity), species (Solanum tuberosum S. vernei), herbivory (presence absence phloem-feeding insect, Macrosiphum euphorbiae) found that influenced herbivore-associated microbiome but also composition. relative strength these effects demonstrated initial explained most variation plant- Our findings strongly suggest community is driver multiple associated (plant insect), this has implications for importance management systems. Plant monocultures produce more antagonistic soil Streptomyces communities than high-diversity plant communities
Plantesoil feedbacks are important to productivity and plant community dynamics in both natural and managed ecosystems. Among soil bacteria, the Streptomyces possess particularly strong antagonistic activities and inhibit diverse plant pathogens, offering a clear pathway to involvement in plantesoil feedbacks. We hypothesized that feedback effects and the ability of individual host plant specie...
متن کاملPlant diversity increases soil microbial activity and soil carbon storage.
Plant diversity strongly influences ecosystem functions and services, such as soil carbon storage. However, the mechanisms underlying the positive plant diversity effects on soil carbon storage are poorly understood. We explored this relationship using long-term data from a grassland biodiversity experiment (The Jena Experiment) and radiocarbon ((14)C) modelling. Here we show that higher plant ...
متن کاملPlant Diversity Impacts Decomposition and Herbivory via Changes in Aboveground Arthropods
Loss of plant diversity influences essential ecosystem processes as aboveground productivity, and can have cascading effects on the arthropod communities in adjacent trophic levels. However, few studies have examined how those changes in arthropod communities can have additional impacts on ecosystem processes caused by them (e.g. pollination, bioturbation, predation, decomposition, herbivory). ...
متن کاملAre cattle surrogate wildlife? Savanna plant community composition explained by total herbivory more than herbivore type.
The widespread replacement of wild ungulate herbivores by domestic livestock in African savannas is composed of two interrelated phenomena: (1) loss or reduction in numbers of individual wildlife species or guilds and (2) addition of livestock to the system. Each can have important implications for plant community dynamics. Yet very few studies have experimentally addressed the individual, comb...
متن کاملMicrobial diversity and soil functions
Soil is a complex and dynamic biological system, and still in 2003 it is difficult to determine the composition of microbial communities in soil. We are also limited in the determination of microbially mediated reactions because present assays for determining the overall rate of entire metabolic processes (such as respiration) or specific enzyme activities (such as urease, protease and phosphom...
